Heavy but cute. To phrase it somewhat callously, seems Yoshimoto’s characters could all benefit from a healthy dose of trust in the potential of the future to let go of the past (credit to Chuck Palahniuk for that concept). The main motif in Kitchen and its companion story Moonlight Shadow is coping with grief and loss. Yoshimoto is lauded for the simplicity of her storytelling, and that simplicity is exactly what I struggled to appreciate. A little less conversation, a lot less action and a lot more metaphor is my preferred storytelling, sorry.
